Slide: I couldn't call myself a Bill Plympton fan, although I wrote of him from his art style and as one of my inspirations towards my artist statement. In truth, I only knew of him through his mainstream contributions from the Simpsons and Red Bull, and only used him as an example through his mainstream appeal as the “King of Indie Animation” when writing of him. After reading his book, studying Eastern European and Indie American Animation, I couldn’t really see the title fit towards him. His newest works show his strength in distorting the human form, but his overall piece Slide shows faults due to his ambition.  To set the scene, I volunteered as a staff member for the 31st Underground Film festival last Friday, believing I could watch strong shorts along with wanting to invite my younger brother. I came in blind, not sure what to expect in terms of quality or even theme, and at best wanted to situate myself as a film critic. Although I had mixed feelings on the presenting fi...

36th Iranian Film Festival Review at the Gene Siskle Center

I took the challenge to watch a film a day for the 36th Iranian Film festival.I took several Iranian cinema classes during my bachelors, and  gained a strong appreciation of Iranian and live action cinema as a whole. It’s hard to remember notes and concepts. My hope is for people to realize what I love the most about Iranian cinema, the self reference of the genre of films as a whole., Whether that be towards the government or towards the appreciation of filmmaking in a contained way to the individual.       This, to me, separates Iranian cinema in comparison to several European and American experimental films, which challenge the art of filmmaking in terms of the medium rather than to the person. I’m not sure if this is a brand US filmmakers focused on or if this theme was constantly re-inspired to the next generation of filmmakers over again. Regardless, this is what I aim to explore while watching films I have and haven't seen before. These concepts of self r...

FAV Senior Show Reviews of 2024

In all truth, I didn't know if I was going to write again for this year as I started regretting what I said of certain films. Not because I think the opinions are wrong, but rather because of the effect it had on people. I tried to only bring positive energy for these pieces, and I failed last year from some. Learning from past mistakes, along with seeing everyone's process of the work as a Senior, my perspective will reach towards more sympathetic rather than anything else. If, through these reviews, you believe I am incorrect or there is something I haven't considered, please let me know through email or in person. Otherwise, I hope that after these reviews and after my final year here at RISD, I'll still have the passion to write so much more about the wonderful films I see everyone do. Potentially come back after grad school to re-experience the magic of RISD. The senior show hasn't started but I am excited for upcoming films that I highly recommend you watch on...
